The WonderSwan is a fifth generation handle held video game console that was originally released in 1999 in Japan by Bandai, it came in shortly after the Game Boy had made the leap to the Game Boy Colour and the release of the Neo Geo Pocket. This game console was originally designed by Gunpei Yokoi, who was previously synonymous with Nintendo and known for the creation of the Game Boy. Shortly after he resigned from Nintendo, Bandai moved on to quickly get Yokoi’s services to create the WonderSwan, though he died before its release, his designs made it into the final product that is now enjoyed today.
Despite coming in after its main competitors, the WonderSwan had some standout features that gave it an edge in the already crowded video game console market: first of the WonderSwan was very cheap and affordable. The console had a 16-bit central processing unit, coupled with long AA battery power life, the WonderSwan was playable both vertically and horizontally, and came with a unique library of games, including numerous first-party titles. Being made by Bandai, the console came with a stream of popular anime licensed software that couldn't be bought anywhere else for a while, thus most of these games were exclusively WonderSwan games.
With creating just two more models the WonderSwan Colour and WonderSwan Crystal, WonderSwan racked in a good number of sales, though not nearly enough clout to push the Game Boy out of business, but just enough to push Nintendo into making a few changes.
